Omosede Global Foundation took Benedict, Daphlin and Adesuwa for its second Open Heart Surgery Mission on November 22, 2019 in Abuja. All three children have a heart defect/disease and are in need of surgery.
The families left Benin to Abuja on Friday, November 22, 2019, under the supervision of Kingsley Ohens a volunteer with Omosede Global Foundation.
Benedict who had gone for the May 2019 Mission previously screened and admitted for surgery, but didn’t get surgery due to an infection, was on priority list for surgery in November 2019. On arrival at Abuja the families where transported to the hotel. Each family was given a room. They had a day of rest on Saturday, November 23, 2019. On Sunday, November 24, 2019 the families were taken to National Hospital for registration and placed on the list. Monday, November 25, 2019 the three children through all the preliminaries and were screened. Benedict was rescreened to be sure his condition has not changed since May 2019. He was admitted into the hospital for surgery. Omololu Ojehomon joined the team on Monday, November 25, 2019 to handle all financial arrangements with the hospital.
The screening for Daphlin and Adesuwa showed that both children had more than was initially diagnosed in Benin. Both children in addition needed tissue repair. The surgeons put them on priority list for April 2020, when they will have all the materials for surgery and be better prepared for them. Both Children along with their mothers returned back to Benin on Friday, November 29, 2019.
Monday, November 25, 2019, Benedict was admitted into the Pediatric Cardiac Ward for open heart surgery.
On Tuesday, November 26, 2019, Benedict was placed on no food or water. Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at 1:19 pm Benedict was prepped for surgery, and moved to ICU to be monitored. 45 mins later he was taken to the theatre for surgery.
At about 9:00 pm Benedict was out of surgery and in the ICU. The surgery was successful. At about 10:33 am on Thursday, November 28, 2019 Benedict was awake. Friday, November 29, 2019, Benedict was moved to regular ward, by Friday, November 29, 2019, Benedict was on his feet and able to walk around.
He was Discharged on Sunday, December 1, 2019. His follow-up letter was picked up on Monday, December 2, 2019 and on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 the team along with Benedict and his parents returned to Benin.
On Thursday, December 5, 2019, Benedict went for his follow-up visit at UBTH. His bandage was removed. His parents were informed that Benedict will no longer require any medication for his heart after two weeks.
Through the help of donors, Omosede Global Foundation paid for Benedict’s surgery, accommodation, transportation and provided a stipend to each family. A post surgery care package was given to Benedict. All arrangements in Abuja and at the National hospital was handled and taken care of by the Foundation.
