It’s not just a heart for Emmanuel

Emmanuel was adopted at six months. His parents couldn’t believe it when they got the call. They rushed to pick him up and did the needful. Straight to the hospital to make sure they had his medical history and up to date for his vaccines. Suddenly, the story changed, Emmanuel had a hole in his tiny heart and Hepatitis B.  The hospital advised to take him back to the orphanage or take him home to die.

Broken by the news, Emmanuel’s parents took him home. They prayed about it and made the decision that Emmanuel was their son. They had asked God for a child and had been given one, they will fight for Emmanuel’s life. Emmanuel is their only child.

In April 2019, a call came through to Omosede Global Foundation. A family friend had seen the flyer put out by the foundation for children needing heart surgery and contacted us. She said that the case was important and hoped that the foundation will consider putting Emmanuel on the list.

On Tuesday, April 16, 2019, Emmanuel arrived Benin City from Oyo State to meet with the designated consultant, Dr Wilson Sadoh, Pediatric Cardiologist/Surgeon for the heart project at the University Benin Teaching Hospital the next day, Wednesday, April 17, 2019. It was confirmed that Emmanuel did have a hole in the heart and Hepatitis B. Medication was given to Emmanuel to treat the heart condition and was confirmed eligible for heart surgery. Omosede Global Foundation took responsibility for Emmanuel’s treatment up until surgery.

On Friday, May 24, 2019 Omosede Global Foundation mobilized Emmanuel from Oyo State where he lives to Abuja for surgery. He joined the rest of the team at the hotel on Sunday, May 26, 2019. The Foundation provided accommodation, feeding, transportation and paid all bills hospital. Both parents were active and helpful to make sure the process went smoothly for their son and were present at all points.

On Monday, May 27, 2019, Emmanuel was screened by the surgeon to verify his referral, and confirmed Emmanuel eligible for open heart surgery. On Thursday, May 30, 2019, he was admitted into the National Hospital, Abuja for open heart surgery.

All blood work up and pre-ops were done. At this point, it was determined that Emmanuel will not be able to get heart surgery because his viral load for his Hepatitis B was high and surgery could not be performed due to the surgeons being at risk. On Friday, May 31, 2019, Emmanuel was discharged to treat for his Hepatitis B, rescheduled for September 2019 and placed on priority. On Saturday, June 1, 2019, Emmanuel returned home.

Emmanuel came to Benin City, on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 to pick up his medication for his heart defect. He also registered to start his clinic to manage his Hepatitis B to bring his viral load down and got his Lab work done same day.

On Thursday, June 20, 2019, he began the process to treat his Hepatitis. His blood work showed that his viral load was high and in need of treatment. Omosede Global Foundation asked his parents to take him to University College Hospital, Ibadan to continue with the treatment. However, no treatment was available to the child. The Foundation then involved its physician, Dr. Kenneth Atoe, consultant to assist with the treatment of the child. After weeks of investigating and searching for the right medication and dosage for Emmanuel’s age, none was available. We then sent word out for assistance to the Association of Nigerian Physicians in America (ANPA) through Dr. Uyi Igbinadolor who reacted immediately. We are hoping for collaboration with ANPA to save Emmanuel’s Life. Emmanuel is now sixteen months old.

We have found the right medication/dosage/consistency for Emmanuel in the USA, however, it is not free. Please help save this child’s life by donating to the Foundation, so we can purchase this medication for him and treat.  His treatment for his Hepatitis B will take about a year and once the viral load is brought down to undetectable levels, which is not harmful to the child and others, Emmanuel will have his open heart surgery. God bless you.
